if you build it, they will come
Much like the movie Field of Dreams, all that a person needs to begin contributing is a playground. Thousands of hackers all over the world spend their time creating custom solutions to their everyday problems. Putting their heads together and harnessing their collective efforts makes sense when tackling interesting problems. Programmers may not be fungible, but this concept has little importance if hundreds or even thousands of programmers give their free time to a code-base. If you are considering a new project that has general or widespread appeal, consider an open-source model. If your idea truly has spirit, then you will find yourself with a large community of developers that you won’t have to pay. They will contribute for community notoriety or simply because the project is interesting to them. Your idea will likely come to fruition better, faster and cheaper than if you had paid for a development team.
